Our purpose is to connect IB schools and students. We prioritise accessibility, academics, and our chosen charity.

The first round of the International Douglas-Young Tournament aims to prove a student’s deep understanding of their chosen subject and select a talented pool of participants for the second round.

Students will pick a subject to compete in. The subject students pick is binding and cannot be changed once the first round starts.

  • Students will write an assessment out of 50 marks:
    • 25 marks for multiple-choice questions
    • 25 marks for open-ended questions
  • 50 minutes to complete the assessment, 1 mark per minute
  • Test syllabuses will be released in October and available on this website
  • Students need to know basic concepts usually taught in the first two months of the IB diploma. However, specific details about what is tested will be released in the test syllabuses. This is the same for every subject.
  • Each student will be given a student code when registering for the tournament. This code is used instead of the student’s name to reduce any possible bias.

Students will write their test in their own school.

Students must write the test anytime between Monday 21st of October and Friday 25th of October 2024. If these dates interfere with any national holidays or other occasions, schools must notify the DYT team immediately to arrange alternative dates. Tests must then be sent to the DYT team before 16:00 CET Monday 28th of October, 2024. Schools can either scan the tests and send them in a folder or send them by post to Ikast-Brande Gymnasium, Denmark.

All MYP5, Pre-IB, first-year IB DP, and second-year IB DP students can join DYT. IB DP students must be studying the full IB diploma to be eligible to join DYT. This means that students must be taking at least six IB classes and/or must be completing any of the core requirements (CAS, EE, TOK). Participants also have to be at least 15 years old by Monday 21st of October 2024 to join DYT.

Unfortunately, students cannot sign up independently. If a school has not registered for DYT, no students from that school are allowed to join. If you are an independent student who wants to join, we recommend that you contact your IB coordinator and encourage them to sign up your school.

Joining the tournament is free for all students.

Schools must pay a registration fee of 72$ to sign up as a school. Why?. If schools have not signed up and paid the registration fee, no students from that school are eligible to participate in DYT.

Schools may expect to see extra costs if they wish to send the tests back to Ikast-Brande Gymnasium, Denmark as a physical package. However, schools have the option of scanning the complete tests and sending them through a designated email address in a folder, which would be free. Schools also may expect to see some small costs when it comes to printing tests.

The second and final round of the International Douglas-Young Tournament aims to prove a student’s ability to explain their chosen subject in a real-world context.

This round consists of a 5-to-10-minute individual oral presentation about the students’ chosen subject. Students must explain a topic of their choice while connecting it to a specific prompt. This year’s prompt is “In the Club”. Students are encouraged to think of unique and entertaining topics. Here are some examples of topics that could be used for the presentation round:

  • Supply and demand of sports clubs after the world cup – Economics
  • Alcohol’s effect on the body – Biology
  • Chemical composition of makeup – Chemistry
  • Business plans of golf clubs – Business Management
  • Kiss nightclub fire in 2013, why the fire spread so quickly – Physics

Students are encouraged to make a digital presentation (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Canva…) to aid with clarity, but this is not obligatory. If students decide to make a digital presentation, they must send it to admin@interntaional-dyt.org before their presentation starts. The subject of the email containing the digital presentation must be “FULL NAME – CHOSEN SUBJECT”.

eg. [John Smith – Biology]

Presentation mark schemes will be released soon. The mark scheme for this round is designed so that no student can get a perfect score.

The second and final round of the International Douglas-Young Tournament (DYT) will take place in Ikast-Brande Gymnasium in Ikast, Denmark. Students must pay for their transportation and accommodation. There are free activities, social events, and food for students to enjoy while they wait to present or after they have presented.

  • 2 students from the science section
  • 1 student from the mathematics section

Students who did not get through to the second round still have the chance to experience it (without competing). However, they will need to pay an extra fee to DYT.

DYT allows a maximum of two teacher chaperones per school. Each school is highly recommended to bring a teacher chaperone for the following reasons:

  • Teachers can book flights and hotels for participants who are under 18
  • Fun weekend for your staff
  • Supervise and ensure that your students are representing your school well

Student ambassadors are automatically invited to the second round to help the organisers. It is important to note that they do not participate in the competition as they are part of the organising team.

Participants who made it through to the second round will not need to pay any fees to DYT. They will however need to arrange their accommodation and transport to the event. DYT will provide transport and hotel guides on the website soon.

Teacher chaperones will need to pay a fee of 15$ to DYT. Why?. However, teacher chaperones will also need to arrange their accommodation and transport to the event. DYT will provide transport and hotel guides on the website soon.

Participants who did not make it through to the second round but still want to attend it will need to pay an additional fee of 15$ to DYT to cover their expenses. Why?. These students will not participate in the tournament anymore but they will be able to experience the activities, social events, and ceremonies. However, participants will need to arrange their accommodation and transport to the event. DYT will provide transport and hotel guides on the website soon.

Student ambassadors do not have to pay any fees to DYT. They will, however, need to arrange their accommodation and transport to the event. DYT will provide transport and hotel guides on the website soon.

Apart from these small fees, DYT will provide people with dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday. There will also be small snacks, soda, and so on available for free throughout the day.

Transparency is Key

The creation and maintenance of a web platform is crucial to the communication of information, registration processes, and ongoing updates pertinent to the tournament. Financial resources are needed for the procurement of domain services, web development, security measures, and hosting arrangements, ensuring an accessible and user-friendly interface for participants.

In acknowledgment of participants’ dedication and prowess, it is imperative to provide tangible incentives in the form of prizes. These items not only symbolize achievement but also serve as motivators, inspiring healthy competition and fostering a sense of accomplishment among contenders. The allocation of funds towards these items ensures that winners receive quality prizes for their efforts.

Meals, refreshments, and snacks are essential for the comfort and well-being of participants throughout the tournament. Catering provides quality food items, logistical arrangements for meal services, and adherence to dietary preferences and restrictions.

To make sure that any sudden problems are promptly solved, we require a miscellaneous fund. Any leftover money from this fund will go to our charity.

DYT’s purpose is not only to carry out a fruitful tournament but also to give back to deserving communities. School sign-up fees contribute to our charity and make sure that our donation is substantial.

Sadly, we cannot cover accommodation and transport costs for the final round. However, as organisers, we keep trying our best to find ways to reduce these costs. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for your support and participation, and we eagerly anticipate the unfolding of a memorable tournament.
